L’Orchestre International de Genève

L’Orchestre International de Genève is a non-profit Association, listed in the Geneva Trade and Companies Register as of April 1, 2010.

The orchestra’s origin dates back 2009, when a concert was performed by the visiting Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra at the opening of the Fêtes de Genève, in the presence of the Sultanate of Oman. The Omani authorities, delighted with the warm welcome they were given in Geneva, responded with invitation for an orchestra from Geneva to visit Oman and participate in the festivities marking the 40th “National Day” of the Sultanate of Oman.

L’Orchestre International de Genève was specially created to represent Geneva—and Switzerland—at this notable anniversary, and the orchestra’s inaugural concert took place on November 10, 2010, in the prestigious Al Butan Palace Auditorium in Mascate, Sultanate of Oman. In attendance were members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister and numerous dignitaries from the diplomatic and consular corps.

One of the unique aspects of this innovative performing organisation is its decision not to run itself in the traditional, institutional manner, with a long-term music director and section principals.

Instead, it is a creative entity with variable geometry, uniquely tailored for each concert according to the works to be presented, the size of the venue, the nature of the expected audience, and the requirements of the supporting partners who are involved. Additionally, although L’Orchestre International de Genève will of course interpret the great classical repertoire, it also wishes to introduce bolder programming, in which art and culture complement each other.

For any concert, the orchestra will contract between 35 to 50 highly talented young professional musicians, hand-picked according to the nature of the musical programme and united by a common artistic ideal for the engagement. The musicians represent over 15 nationalities, in keeping with the worldly nature of its city of residence.

Through its music-making, L’Orchestre International de Genève seeks to engage in cultural and socio-economic exchanges, in order to strengthen the links between Geneva and the international world.

Conscious of its social responsibility, to its musicians, its audiences and beyond, l’Orchestre International de Genève is committed to bringing together emerging talents from around the world with renowned, established conductors and soloists, thereby offering them a platform—in the form of significant musical events in Switzerland and abroad—from which to express their inspiration, creativity and artistic vision.
